Meanwhile, a lot of Official I’m A Simple Man I Like Beer Cross Four Leaf Clovers Shirt modern. Movements were hated by the culture at large while they were being created and only came to be appreciated later. These people were super fucking poor and could have made their money by figuratively blowing the rich with oil paints, but they didn’t. You really can’t avoid the fact that a lot of these painters worked out of a real passion, because of they sure as shit weren’t doing it for the money. Artists didn’t start getting rich on their art (for the most part) until like the 80s or so, and that was only because other people (aka nouveau-riche investors) turned the art market into a new stock market and blew all the value into the stratosphere. It’s not the artists who have decided that a banana is worth 120k. That shit is 100% on the bankers.

This stuff has Official I’m A Simple Man I Like Beer Cross Four Leaf Clovers Shirt going. On for at least a century. I didn’t get around to art history before dropping out, but my sculpture teacher liked to bring up this point of debate from time to time. To me, the art world is a bunch of people trying to figure out either what art is, what they can get away with, or just what hasn’t been done yet. Some people are gonna see it as nothing but pretentious, and some of it is, but overall I just find it fascinating and amusing. If you did that now everyone would just say it’s been done before. If you wanna hurt an artist call their work derivative.

I used to think Official I’m A Simple Man I Like Beer Cross Four Leaf Clovers Shirt of Pollock for. The same reason a lot of people do, but while working on. Some kind of project (maybe art history, or just US history or something) I saw a bunch of his older, lesser-known paintings. Not his stuff everybody knows, but a bunch of kinda Salvador Dali-esque landscapes and weird shit. It was kinda strange, and obviously artistically “immature”, but there was obviously a ton of skill to it. It made me look more carefully at his better-known works, and I have to say I appreciate them. More knowing he had the skill to do whatever he wanted and deliberately chose the medium and method he did.
