The First Order is a bunch of Nice Cactus Not A Hugger Shirt lunatics, too. Piett, Veers, Tarkin, and characters of that level in the Empire never raised their voices or screamed or flipped their shit– they were portrayed as professionals coolly doing their jobs. It lent the Empire some weight. The First Order is laughable in this respect. Like how in Star Trek time travelers destroyed half the federation fleet and their most advanced planet, and it made no difference to the timeline. In the next movie, they’re off having random adventures doing discovery stuff, not desperately trying to defend the federation against all the threats that were barely handled the first time when they were in a far better position. It’s not even clear why Kirk was given the Captain role again, he was a dropout student who stole the ship briefly in that timeline. But… reboot nostalgia!

Unofficially supported by the Republic since the idea of openly policing like a military was seriously frowned upon by the people as a whole after the fall of the.

Empire – because if they were Nice Cactus Not A Hugger Shirt militant or controlling. What was the point? The Republic is a bit less xenophobic/Alien-Racist? That’s only going to get you so far. The New Republic having no or little military of their own is dumb. And the unreasonable idea, given the galaxy they live in is constantly at war. The Old Republic was brought down by a militant coup after a destructive war, the tyrannical empire that resulted had to be removed through a costly war. And they were constantly threatened by a militaristic nation that eventually destroyed three of their capital worlds to start a new war.
