I’m really weird about faces, apparently. Unless the character’s face is given a really detailed description (or they’re on the Funny I’m Not Sleeping I’m Resting My Eyes Shirt cover of the book or something), I don’t usually picture anything there. People’s clothes and hair often get much more description than their faces do. So when these pictures pop up in my head, they’ve often got blank faces. I think this is true for most people. Very quick visual flashes, where all the details are not necessarily present, but certainly if you thought and focused, you’d be able to at least conjure their shape and general idea.

I heard of the Funny I’m Not Sleeping I’m Resting My Eyes Shirt term a year or so ago and it’s interesting – I have it! But what’s clear to me is that it isn’t an on/off but a big old spectrum. I’m down towards one side, you and most people are towards the middle, and then some people are extreme in the other way: there are people on this thread who claim to see every shadow and wrinkle of the scenes they are looking at. Definitely a spectrum. I can picture so little that I rarely even try. I just have an internal monologue going all the time. I can’t picture color at all.

People are mostly just a flash of a silhouette. I can’t hold even simple shapes fixed in my mind, it spins/rotates. I’m extremely visual but do that too. It’s almost like I’m not as interested in the author’s version of they’re seeing. Much more interesting to just let my own mind supply whatever it wants. I’ll hear and answer things when I’m reading, but the Funny I’m Not Sleeping I’m Resting My Eyes Shirt hearing and answering is autopilot. My husband loves testing this out. I will remember what I read but have no idea what I said to him.
