I can’t find a ton of sources, but I think for shots where the Official Motor Harley Davidson Cycles Vintage Shirt was turning in Mos Eisley you easily see the mirror/wheels, so the vaselined a small part of the lens and kept it centered. The 70’s version has a noticeable brownish/orangeish blob under the speeder. The Special Edition VHS tapes even started with a little documentary about what they’d changed and why that showed the unedited clip and had George talking about how originally they’d smeared Vaseline on the lense and they’d jokingly called the resulting blob “the force field.” The screenshot is misleading: The final shot looks way different in the original versions and the special editions. I’m 90% certain that is a screenshot of the more modern digital versions that added CG.

I remember the original cut being orangish and blurry underneath the speeder. It looks like the Official Motor Harley Davidson Cycles Vintage Shirt is recessed under the vehicle just a bit with a slight angle. With the sun at the right spot in the sky, you can see on the bottom picture that it is going to reflect the shadowed portion cast on the ground as well as the unshadowed ground. The pic OP used is of the special edition where they touched it up with CGI. The new ones have a tendency to randomly explode. They’ll “conveniently” sell you a new droid that doesn’t have the problem though. What a racket. They literally smeared a little vaseline on the camera lens which obscured the wheels just enough. But the above image actually ISN’T from the theatrical cut (which had the vaseline).

They removed the Official Motor Harley Davidson Cycles Vintage Shirt in the 1997 Special Edition thanks to cheaper and more modern digital rotoscoping effects to make the shots look (almost literally) cleane It is currently at the Petersen Auto Museum in Los Angeles on loan from the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. They have a movie car exhibit right now that’s pretty cool. I know that a lot of CG goes unnoticed, especially when used for things like backgrounds and small details. And I’m not saying that CG is bad, or that everything should be 100% practical. My main point is that the amount of ingenuity has largely declined because of CG. We got awesome prosthetics, full actual sets, etc. But since CG, that’s almost always the answer
