Ash was at least more competitive and used a good team and became the runner-up in the league. He wasn’t the dumpster fire dumb kid from BW. And team rocket is pretty strong in sun and moon but it is more a slice of life anime and the art style puts many people off. For me personally, the sun and moon are the second-best seasons after XY. The thing is that the XY season was so good. Ash was competent and used tactics. Used Pokemon that wasn’t Pikachu. Serena’s side plot was engaging and worked on Ash’s character as well. Battles are very well animated It seemed like the series was going to return to form and maybe even beyond.

The writer of the Pokemon Anime mentions he switches out the girls for diverse eye candy and so they can put them in cute costumes and swimsuits. I am sure other writers try to give the girls character and arcs but the head writer at the time saw them as an afterthought. Notice all the Pokemon girls get a swimsuit episode. Seriously Japan gets your shit together. Anyone who grew up with the Kanto league and the original GameBoy games lost interest sometime around/after the Johto chapter.

As someone who did grow up with it (my entire Nice My Husband Is My Guardian Angel He Watches Over My Back Shirt school had seen the first movie when it came out), and while I did enjoy Pokemon Go more recently, it really needs to go away now. Time for something new. The original anime will go on forever. There’s no debate about that. It’s basically an ad for the rest of the franchise. I think that they should make an alternative series that actually has a story, with entirely new characters. No gym leaders going with them, no in-game rivals or characters, just a better story in the same world, like what they did with SAO.
